Description

In 1956, Mercedes-Benz began to work on replacing the Ponton with a design focused on passenger comfort and safety – and thus, the 220 “fintail” was born. Series production of the 4-door saloon began in 1959 and continued right up until 1968 – proving a strong production run.

Introduced with a 2.2-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine across the range for the W111 variants, this was the perfect match for the 220 as it was reliable and provided more than adequate power outputs while still allowing for a smooth, comfortable driving experience.

The example on offer is the top-of-the-line 220SEb with a column shift manual transmission. Finished in the correct black over red leather interior, its paint and body present beautifully with a great grille, bumpers, trim and glass. It is showing 18800 km on the clock, but considering its age, we can only assume it has already clicked over the 100 000 km mark.
